Dissertation Chapter 1 Assignment (Assignment 2)
In Assignment 2 you will complete a draft of the first chapter of your dissertation, that will
comprise a statement of your thesis intent, a background to the work you are proposing and
the key aim(s) and objective(s) of your work, alongside the methodology that you will use to
achieve these.
Guidelines
• This assignment follows on from the Research Proposal Workshop and aims to
provide a synthesis of the work you intend to do through the rest of your studies.
• The work you produce here should be of sufficient quality to be used as part of your
CA 1 review.
• Without being overly prescriptive, a potential structure for the first chapter might
be:
o Introduction and Background
o Aims
o Objectives
o Methodology
o Future Impact/Significance
Other structures may be more suitable to your work
• As a guide your chapter 1 assignment should be ~5000 words in length.
• In addition, as a cover to your assignment you should include a page that
summarises the components discussed in the Workshop:
o Topic
o Keywords
o Thesis statement 1
o Thesis statement 2
o Aim 1
o Aim 2 etc
o Objective 1
§ Success condition 1

not forward the assignment to your supervisor, so this is your responsibility.
Marking
High Distinction
(HD)
85-100% Work of outstanding quality and clarity. A HD assignment will be
written clearly and concisely and offer a through discussion of aims,
objectives and methodology; it will offer a defensible thesis statement
and a compelling vision for the work in question. It will set the work
firmly in the context of the relevant literature and/or broader work in
the area and give a strong consideration for the future impact or
importance of the work. It will likely be of good enough quality to
appear in the final dissertation without further editing. The writing will
be of outstanding quality paying attention to grammar, spelling and
document flow.
Distinction (D) 75-84% Work of superior quality. A D assignment will be written clearly and
concisely and offer a high-quality discussion of aims, objectives and
methodology; it will offer a defensible thesis statement and a
compelling vision for the work in question, although there is likely room
to sharpen the ideas. It will set the work in the context of the relevant
literature and/or broader work in the area and give good consideration
for the future impact or importance of the work. It will likely be almost
good enough quality to appear in the final dissertation without further
editing. The writing will be high-quality paying attention to grammar,
spelling and document flow.
Credit (C) 65-74% Work of good quality. Such an assignment will be written clearly and
concisely and offer a good discussion of aims, objectives and
methodology; it will offer a defensible thesis statement and a good
vision for the work in question, although there is room to sharpen the
ideas, especially in the methodology section. It will set the work in the
context of the relevant literature and/or broader work in the area,
although lacks a full consideration of the most important aspects and
give good consideration for the future impact or importance of the
work. It will likely need some editing to appear in the final dissertation.
The writing will be of good quality paying attention to grammar,
spelling and document flow.
Pass (P) 50-64% Work of satisfactory quality. To pass this assessment the assignment is
likely to be lacking in a number of areas associated with the aims,
objectives and methodology, and may not offer a clear pathway for the
rest of the proposed work. The work will be set in context but there will
be omission in some of the key reasoning for the work, and a failure to
give compelling reasons for undertaking the study proposed. The
impact of the work is poorly discussed. The writing is likely to be of
lower quality than needed for a Credit grade, with significant
weaknesses in grammar, spelling and overflow document narrative.
Fail <50% Work showing unsatisfactory achievement. A Fail grade is likely if the
piece of work does not show evidence setting out clear aims or
objectives, or where the methodology is lacking or poorly thought out.
An overall thesis statement may be missing. The work is unlikely to be
set in context or have a clear idea of future impact or significance. A Fail
may also arise from a piece of work that is substandard in terms of the
writing or the recommended length, or where the document is poorly
structured with little consideration for the purpose of the work.
Work will also receive a Fail where the requested cover document is
not complete
