Causes of resistance to organizational change

Myopia is a major source of resistance to organizational change.
Myopia entails an inability by some stakeholders to have a clear vision
of the potential benefits of the change. Moreover, resistance may come
from the refusal by some people to embrace unexpected and undesirable
information. Also, some employees are known to exhibit high levels of
inertia and refuse to let the status quo go even in the face of changes
in the marketplace. Communication barriers may cause a distortion of information hence the
message of the change is destroyed. Therefore, stakeholders receive
insufficient information on which to base their decision regarding their
response to the change. Moreover, employees may resist change owing to
their bad experiences from the past. People who have worked in
organizations in which change efforts have failed are likelier to object
successive change processes. Additionally, employees working in
organizations where the management does not offer proper guidance and
support throughout the change process are likely to resist the change
effort.Resistance may result when employees are presented with several targets
to achieve within a limited time frame. Moreover, when several targets
are presented simultaneously, employees get overwhelmed and are likely
to resist the change process. Ideally, change is supposed to be broken
down into small achievable targets and the short-term gains used to
supply momentum to the remaining phases. Resistance also becomes inevitable when their is a wide gap between the
ideals of individuals regarding important change values and those of the
company. Again, resistance is likely when the organization has
different factions pulling in opposite directions about the change. Such
disagreements make some people discouraged and offer resistance to the
change process. Some organizations also have values that are deeply
embedded in their organizational culture, and therefore, very difficult
to eliminate or replace. The employees of such companies automatically
offer resistance to the change process.
