The key characteristics of a hegemony

The country focuses on establishing an equitable order in the world
in which associations between two states are of mutual benefit. This is
an agenda which no doubt shuns hegemony. The second feature of a hegemon
is political, military and economic capabilities. Evaluating China from
this perspective, it is clear that its agenda in Africa is not
hegemonic. China does not possess the kind of clout enjoyed by the US
and the EU in this region. The third characteristic of a hegemon is the
level of recognition for its participation and influence on
international institutions. Such powers are known to design, build and
maintain global orders. This is normally done in the form of
international institutions. The United States of America, in its
endeavor to establish hegemony across the globe, designed global
political as well as economic orders after the Second World War. A
country aspiring to establish hegemony does not adhere to the rules
already established by earlier hegemons. On the contrary, it challenges
them. It comes up with its own institutions which mirror its unique
preferences as far as rules followed in the international system are
concerned.
